How can airports and railway stations sweat their assets before building new facilities?
Our world is changing. Our lives and personal requirements are changing, too. It feels like, Greta Thunberg was the first to draw our attention to the fact that every one of us needs to live more sustainably. Climate change and following natural disasters raise awareness of the need for more sustainability. The Corona pandemic underpinned our constantly changing requirements. Mobility remains a key element in our lives, and we can experience daily, that mobility is subject to change, too. Many people work from home, commuting is significantly reduced, international business travel is very restricted, etc.
This is where our important analysis method comes into play: the simulation.
Why is passenger flow simulation important?
We cannot build new buildings and destroy old ones with every new requirement to our transport infrastructure. On the one hand, this is not sustainable, on the other hand, it is not recommended because continuous adjustments must be made to our transport infrastructure. With the passenger flow simulation, you have the possibility to test the functionality of any project in planning stage. It is a simple analysis method that immediately reveals whether a project concept will meet the new requirements. This gives you a clear insight into complex building structures and allows you to react to any bottleneck at a very early stage.
How do we apply passenger flow simulation at IADC?
The key task for transport infrastructure is always to accommodate constantly changing requirements. Unfortunately, our built infrastructure is very static and the constantly changing requirements are very dynamic. We have specialized on optimising transport infrastructure. We focus on understanding technical traffic processes quickly and developing creative solutions for complex transport infrastructure. The typical challenge is the interaction of the various processors. This means, if you touch one processor, it will automatically impact on the entire passenger journey.
Passenger flow simulation enables the simple review of a range of usage scenarios and reconfiguration layouts and highlights any critical areas. Accordingly, the usage scenario and possible reconfiguration strategy can be adjusted.
Due to high costs and time required, it seemed very complex to test the functionality of a planned reconfiguration. With our passenger flow simulation, this is now possible!
We recommend using this analysis method, especially for transport infrastructure.
What are the main advantages of passenger flow simulation?
It saves a lot of money and time.
Furthermore, your design concept will be understood quickly, and it will make it easier for you to convince other stakeholders or investors.
Together we can optimise your transport infrastructure by applying passenger flow simulation!

(This example of a “heat map” that we implemented for a project in Hamburg. We tested the conceptual scheme of the Deutsche Bahn for a large interchange station “Berliner Tor”. The potential bottlenecks at the central crossing areas are highlighted in “red”, which means this conceptual idea must be adapted.)
